351st Sqdn.. Crew, as above, joined the 100th on 12 Apr 1944. MACR #7814,
Microfiche #2861 A/C
#42-102667On the Merseburg mission of 29 Jul 44, Classe was replaced by
Lt. Sylvester Dittenbenner from the crew of Ernest Zapf; he became a POW. Hogan was probably removed from
the crew when the reduction to a nine man crew was initiated in August
1944. MACR indicates S/Sgt John P. Hunter was shot in the leg/hip area by
German civilians after his parachute landing. A German report, vague and
likely fictitious, states the airman was hospitalized with "wound with
bullet in it, left thigh."
Duration of treatment 4 to 6 weeks, and normal progress of treatment." Staff Sergeant Wayne R. Hogan, Serial # 37498933, 100th Bomb Group, was waist gunner on the B-17, Super Rabbit at Thorpe Abbotts, England. He flew 26 missions over enemy territory in WWII. Military service was from 15 January 1943 to 12 December 1944. He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, ETO ribbon with 2 Battle Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation. His 26th and last mission was 12 July 44 to Munich. He was taken off the crew to reduce to 9 men.
