A/C #42-30758
MACR #2344 -- Microfiche #779
418th Sqdn. Crew, as above joined 100th on 1 Dec 43 and flew its first
mission 31 Dec 43. They were on their ninth mission on 4 Feb 44 to
Frankfurt.
Report pieced together from MACR: A/C struck ground near Maunchen
Gladbach. All crew members in A/C for the crash landing -- there were no
injuries. All survived and were returned to the USA. after VE Day.
Eyewitness:
"A/C #758 filled in as #3 in the 2nd element of the lead squadron. It
was in position when we were over the target, but soon thereafter began to
lag behind. At 1227 hours it pulled away to the right near Wiesbaden and
began to lose altitude slowly. Was last seen on heading of 330 degrees,
still losing altitude, but under control. No chutes were observed. . .
